Class 1 Letter Term 3 2018-2019

Dear Parents and Carers of Class 1,

Happy new year! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas break. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you so much for the presents and cards we received, it was so kind of you.

The children have settled back into a routine brilliantly and I am looking forward to all the exciting things that Term 3 will bring!

We will be reading some more well-loved texts and role playing and re-telling them. We will be planning and writing postcards and recounting our adventures as the characters in the story.

We will be looking at books independently, with our buddies and other adults, individually or in small groups such as during Book Talk.

We will also be having daily Phonics sessions to work on our sounds as well as ‘Write Dance’ and Handwriting sessions which help us to work on gross and fine motor skills.

We will revisit addition and subtraction using numbers between 0 and 20. We will secure number facts and find ways to solve missing number sentences such as 14 + ? = 20. We will then progress to counting, reading and writing numbers to 50 as well as counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10.

Animals including humans – we will be finding out about our five senses and the parts of our body. We will be using our observational skills as well as completing simple investigations and recording our results.

PE: (Monday)

This term is dance. We will learn how to create and perform simple sequences to music.

What is the good news Jesus brings? This term we will be learning about stories from the Gospel that show what Jesus taught about forgiveness, peace and friendship.

With Mrs Whiting we will be introduced to the idea of computer programming. We will be learning what an algorithm is and how simple instructions can be combined to make an object carry out a simple task. We will be using the ‘Bee Bots’ to program this term.

Topic: Who lives in a castle?

We will be finding out about what castles look like as well as building our own models. We will be looking at royal portraits and using a range of media to make our own fit for a King or Queen! We will also be visiting Canterbury Cathedral to find out about castle buildings and have our very own royal dressing up day.

Forest school:

This term is our turn in Forest School! Miss Bergin will lead the sessions and I will be out supporting her. A letter with further information about kit has been sent. It is very chilly so please remind the children to bring in gloves and hats!

Thank you to the parent helpers who were able to come on our nativity walk before Christmas. As I have said before, if you are able to come along for any of our walks, visits or trips please let me know. This term we will be arranging a trip and workshop on castles at Canterbury Cathedral (date TBC) so please look out for a letter coming out soon.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to come and see me, either before or after school. Thank you again for all your support, especially with reading. It really helps to make a difference in the children’s progress.

Thank you from the Year 1 team,

Mrs Beard, Mrs Whiting, Mrs Meadows and Mr Brogan
