Class 2 Letter Term 1 2018-2019

7th September 2018

Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils of Class 2,

Welcome Back! I hope you all had a lovely summer break and the children are ready and raring to learn!

The year two team includes myself and Miss. Collier. Mrs. Twiddle will be covering my release time on Wednesdays.  You are more than welcome to see me after school or email me at kclarkmurphy@st-peters-canterbury.kent.sch.uk to discuss your child’s learning.

It is a big step up from Year 1 to Year 2. I expect the children to showing more independence in a variety of ways - particularly in looking after their classroom, remembering important class events and thinking about how to take the next steps in their learning. The children have already taken well to new routines and staff fantastically well.

In English, we will be starting off the year by reading some poetry by Allan Alhberg, performing some of his poems and writing our own. We will also be looking at nonfiction books linked to our space topic and finding features such as content pages, indexes, glossaries, titles and subheadings. Have a look out for these features when reading with your child at home.  We will be writing nonfiction reports about planets.

Our maths lessons will be full of opportunities for the children to challenge themselves and we will be concentrating improving our reasoning skills. We will be covering number and addition and subtraction in term 1. In the coming weeks, we will also be having a weekly times tables quiz and your children will be starting by recalling multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Regular practise at home will help the children to feel confident when recalling these facts. A fantastic way to start practicing is by counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 both backwards and forwards.

Science lessons this term will be focusing on ‘Animals including Humans’ and revising our knowledge and understanding of ‘Seasonal Change’. We will be spending lots of time outside observing the changes from summer to autumn.

The first topic of the year is called ‘Blast Off!’ and is all about space exploration. Class 2 will be learning about the history of space travel and how astronauts survive in space.

Homework: Homework will be set on a Friday and should be returned to school to be marked on the following Wednesday. Homework will comprise of either a maths or grammar activity to consolidate class 2’s learning. Each task should take no longer than 20 minutes. If it takes longer, feel free to stop them and we will talk about the work in school.

Reading: We expect the children in Class 2 to become more independent as the year progresses. To start this off, children will be expected to know when their home reading books needs changing and place them in the red basket at the front of the classroom first thing in the morning. We will endeavor to change their reading book on the day they give them in and send it home that afternoon. Please keep reading at home as much as possible, as it is absolutely integral to all aspects of learning. Guided group reading is every day, and we are lucky enough to have volunteers in during the week to hear children read individually.

PE: In term 1, Class 2’s PE lessons will be on Tuesdays. Children should have their PE kit in school every day and we will send them home at the end of term to be washed.

Show and Tell: ‘My Special Day’ will be replaced with ‘Show and Tell’ in Class 2, but will not be as frequent. Children may bring in things to show the class but I would like to request that anything brought in is to do with our current topic or recent learning and toys are unfortunately not allowed for Show and Tell in Year 2.

Forest school: Class 2 will be attending forest school every week on Wednesdays this term. There will be information about this from Miss. Bergin.

Once again, please come to speak to me before or after school if you have any

questions or information that I need to know. I’m looking forward to working with you to provide an unforgettable year of learning for Class 2!

Yours Faithfully

Mrs. Clark Murphy
