Class 2 Letter Term 2 2018-2019

2nd November 2018
Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils of Class 2,
Welcome Back! I hope you all had a restful half term and the children are ready for a busy and exciting term. As the weather changes please make sure that your children have a jumper and coat in school everyday.
The year two team continues to include myself and Miss Collier. Mrs Twiddle will also be continuing to cover my release time on Wednesdays. You are more than welcome to see me after school or email me at to discuss your child’s learning.
As part of our English lessons this term we will be reading ‘The Owl who was afraid of the dark’ by Jill Tomlinson and ‘The Hodgeheg’ by Dick King Smith. The children will be writing stories and instructions based upon their reading and investigating adjectives and verbs.
This term we will be continuing our work about addition and subtraction in maths and starting to solve multiplication and division problems in the next few weeks. By Christmas, your children should have a secure understanding of the four operations. We have already started our weekly times tables quizzes and the children have been very proud of the progress they have made. Many children can now recall multiplication and division facts for the ten times tables and are beginning to work on knowing their five times table. If your child already knows their ten, five and two times tables then they can begin to practise their threes and fours.
Science lessons this term will be focusing on ‘Materials’ and revising our knowledge and understanding of ‘Seasonal Change’, looking at the hours of sunlight in a day changes over the year.
Our topic this term is ‘Nocturnal Animals’ and we will be creating art work based upon
this theme over the weeks.
Homework will be set on a Friday and should be returned to school to bemarked on the following Wednesday. Homework will comprise of either a maths or grammar activity to consolidate class 2’s learning. Each task should take no longer than 20 minutes. If it takes longer, feel free to stop them and we will talk about the work in school.
Children are expected to know when their home reading books needs changing and place them in the red basket at the front of the classroom first thing in the morning. We will endeavor to change their reading book on the day they give them in and send it home that afternoon. Please keep reading at home as much as possible, as it is absolutely integral to all aspects of learning. Guided group reading is every day, and we are lucky enough to have volunteers in during the week to hear children read individually. Thank you to those families that read regularly at home, it makes such a difference!
In term 2, Class 2’s PE lessons will be on Mondays and Thursdays. Children should have their PE kit in school every day and we will send them home at the end of term to be washed. Please make sure they have jogging bottoms as we will still be going outside for our PE lessons.
Spellings are sent home on a Friday to be learnt throughout the week for our test the following Friday. Ideas to help practise spellings at home include:
 Cutting out letters from magazines and newspapers to make the spelling words.
 Writing them in different colours.
 Typing them on the computer using different fonts.
 Writing spelling words in capital and then lower case letters.
 Writing out the words and then circling the vowels or consonants.
 Drawing a picture to hide the spellings in.
Once again, please come to speak to me before or after school if you have any questions or information that I need to know.
Yours Faithfully
Mrs. Clark Murphy
