Class 2 Letter Term 4 2018-2019

1st March 2019
Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils of Class 2,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely half term.

Thank you so much for welcoming me into the St. Peter’s community. The children have settled really well and we are now full speed ahead with our learning. Miss Collier and Miss Nevett continue to support the children in class 2 and Mrs Twiddle will continue to teach on Wednesdays. As always if there is anything at all you would like to discuss with me about your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact me, either by making an appointment after school or by emailing me at pgawthorpe@st-peters-canterbury.kent.sch.uk.

Following our topic, ‘The Streets of London,’ in English, we will be writing first person reports and recounts of the Great Fire of London. We will also be writing letters and learning how to lay these out.

In our Maths lessons this term we will be concentrating on Fractions. The children will be learning to recognise shapes of fractions as well as finding fractions of numbers. They will be concentrating on halves, quarters and thirds but will also be learning how to find three quarters of an amount. We will continue to build their understanding of how numbers work by looking for patterns and their knowledge of their times tables, especially their tens, fives and twos which remains paramount.  Our times table test always takes place on Fridays and regular practice at home will help the children to feel confident when recalling these facts.

Science lessons this term will focus on Materials and their uses. This will also link to our Great Fire of London topic as we will look at what is flammable and what is not.

Homework: We are currently revising the school homework policy. Therefore we will be trialing a new type of homework on Year 2. The children will have a menu of activities linked to our topic that they may try.  They must choose one activity a week and return work on Wednesday for it to be sent home again on Friday.

Reading: Children are expected to know when their home reading books need changing and place them in the red basket at the front of the classroom first thing in the morning. We will endeavor to change their reading book on the day they give them in and send it home that afternoon. Please keep reading at home as much as possible, as it is absolutely integral to all aspects of learning. Guided group reading is every day, and we are lucky enough to have volunteers in during the week to hear children read individually. Thank you to those families that read regularly at home, it makes such a difference!

PE: This term Class 2’s PE lessons will be on Mondays and Thursdays. Children should have their PE kit in school every day and we will send them home at the end of term to be washed. Please make sure they have jogging bottoms as we will be going outside for our PE lessons.

Spellings: Spellings are sent home on a Friday to be learnt throughout the week for our test the following Friday. Ideas to help practise spellings at home include:

Cutting out letters from magazines and newspapers to make the spelling words.
Writing them in different colours.
Typing them on the computer using different fonts.
Writing spelling words in capital and then lower case letters.
Writing out the words and then circling the vowels or consonants.
Drawing a picture to hide the spellings in.

Yours Faithfully

Mrs Gawthorpe, Mrs Twiddle and Miss Collier
