Class 4 Letter Term 2 2018-2019

2nd November 2018

Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils of Class 4,

I hope you have had a fantastic half term and that the children are coming back to school ready for an exciting new term!

The Class Four teaching team continues to include myself, Mrs McLanaghan and Miss Mason. On a Tuesday Miss Tydeman will be covering my release time. If you wish to discuss your child’s learning then please feel free to catch me on the playground or email me at lmills@st-peters-canterbury.kent.sch.uk.

In English this term the children will be exploring a range of informal letters. They will be identifying the features of informal letters before planning and writing their own! The children will also be learning how to vary their sentence structure by using more than one clause.

Maths lessons this term will be developing the children’s understanding of multiplication and division. The children will build, draw and solve calculations when multiplying two and three digit numbers by a one digit number. The children will continue to practise their problem solving and reasoning skills relating to multiplication and division. It has been great to see the children becoming more confident when recalling their times tables facts so far this year! Please can children continue to practise their times tables regularly at home.

Our Science topic this term is ‘Sound’. The children will be learning about how sound is made and they will recognise how vibrations from sounds travel to our ears. We will be exploring patterns between pitch and volume and how sounds get fainter when the distance from the sound source increases.

Our topic this term is learning about the fascinating ancient civilization: The Indus Valley. The children will be exploring the lifestyle of this civilisation and why the Indus River was so important for their transportation and trade. We will be looking at how the location of The Indus Valley covered a large area of modern day northeast Afghanistan, Pakistan and northwest India and the children will be using their map skills to identify these locations in an atlas.

Home Learning: Homework will continue to be set on a Friday and it will be due back into school on a Wednesday to be marked. If you have any questions about the homework please feel free to speak to me on the playground or by email.

Reading: I would like to thank you for your support with our class Reading Challenge! The children have shown lots of enjoyment and pride when their name is moved up our reading ladder and it is great to see children reading regularly at home. Please continue to support your children to read at home as this hugely benefits their confidence and progress as young readers.

PE: This term Class 4 will be learning about Hockey. The children will practise how to dribble and pass the ball accurately, before transferring these skills into a game scenario. Class 4 will have their PE lesson on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure that children bring their PE kits into school every Thursday. As the weather is becoming colder, please make sure that your child has outdoor kit that will keep them warm.

Once again, if you wish to contact me please do not hesitate to speak to me on the playground before or after school with any questions or information that I may need to know. Well done to all of the children for a wonderful start to Year Four; I am looking forward to another fantastic term!

Kind regards,
Miss L Mills
