Class 4 Letter Term 4 2018-2019

1st March 2019
Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils of Class 4,

I hope you have had a fun and restful half term break! This term we have lots of exciting learning ahead of us. The Class Four teaching team continues to include myself, Mrs McLanaghan, Miss Mason and Miss Tydeman. We also have Mr Luck, a student teacher from Canterbury Christ Church University, working with Class Four until June.

In English this term the children will be exploring two different text genres: Poetry and Balanced Arguments. The children will be exploring the features of narrative poetry before writing their own exciting poems based around a story. We will be working hard to use exciting and ambitious vocabulary to really bring our poems to life!

Maths lessons this term will continue to develop the children’s understanding
of fractions. They will be using resources, pictures and formal methods to support their understanding when adding fractions with the same denominator and solving problems. Following our work on fractions, we will be learning about decimals. The children will use their understanding of place value to support them when learning about tenths and hundredths.

This term in Science we are learning all about electricity. We will be identifying different everyday appliances that run on electricity. The children will be learning how to construct a simple series circuit and how to identify the different parts, including the cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers.

In our Topic and Music this term we are learning all about the history of classical music. The children will be exploring some famous composers such as Bach and Beethoven and the children will be comparing and discussing these pieces. The children will have the opportunity to listen and reflect upon orchestral music as well as perform as part of an ensemble.

Within their RE learning, Class Four are going to be learning about the Easter Story. The children will be learning about the celebration of Easter for Christians and how they serve on Maundy Thursday, including Holy Communion. The children will be learning about medicines and their risks in their PSHCE lessons. This will include learning about how to stay healthy and about how to keep medicines safely.

In French the children will be learning about the vocabulary for common pets. The children will be learning how to ask and answer the question ‘Do you have a pet?’
Within their computing learning, Class Four will be exploring Robotics and how to use Crumble Technology to make lights switch on and off.

Easter Production: This term Class Three and Four will be busy practising for their Easter Production at the end of Term Four. We will be working hard to learn the songs and the words ready for an exciting performance on Wednesday 3rd April between 2-3pm. There will be more details regarding the production nearer the time.

Home Learning: The children will continue to have their homework set on a Friday and it will be due back into school on the following Wednesday. Please continue to support your children to read for fifteen minutes every day and to practise their times tables regularly.

PE: This term the children are continuing their Swimming lessons on a Monday morning. We are really looking forward to our Forest School sessions with Miss Bergin on a Wednesday morning. Please ensure that on a Wednesday your child brings some old clothes and wellies/ old hiking boots that you do not mind getting muddy. If your child has waterproofs, please pack these as we will be out in all weathers.

If you wish to contact me please do not hesitate to speak to me on the playground before or after school with any questions or information that I may need to know. I am very proud of the fantastic attitude and learning in Class Four so far and I am looking forward to some more brilliant learning in Term 4! Well done!

Many thanks for your continued support.

Best wishes,

Miss L Mills
