Class 5 Letter Term 2 2018-2019

2nd November 2018
Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils of Class 5
Welcome back to an exciting new term. We hope you had a restful half term break. The children produced some wonderful learning last term both in class and at home. We are very proud of their achievements!
Just a reminder that the Year 5 Team are Mrs Pickles (Mon – Wed) and Mrs Walters (Thurs – Fri). Mrs Morse is the Class Teaching Assistant and we are lucky to have our student teacher Miss Holloway from Christchurch University joining us every Tuesday. If you wish to contact us, please email us on the following addresses –
Our new topic this term will be The Titanic. We will be reading a range of reports and narrative texts and the children will be writing newspaper reports and descriptions based on the events. They will be learning about the events that led to the disaster, as well as researching passengers and their stories.
In Maths, our focus this term will be on multiplication and division. The children will be learning about multiples, factors, prime and squared numbers. Later in the term, they will also be learning how to calculate the area and perimeter of various compound shapes.
In Science this term, we will be learning about ‘Earth and Space’. Please encourage your child to do their own research at home and to visit the local library if possible.
Home learning: Home learning will continue to be set on a Friday and is to be returned on the following Wednesday. It will consist of English, Maths and Topic. The children will continue to be given weekly spellings and times tables challenges to learn, ready for a test each Friday. We would also ask you to continue to encourage your child to read at home daily and discuss what they have read.
PE: Our final swimming lesson this term will be on Monday 12th November. The children have worked hard and it has been a pleasure to take them to Kingsmead each week.
As you know, the children will be starting Forest School this term - Each Wednesday morning. Please can you ensure that your child has the correct warm outdoor clothing, including sensible footwear.
We are looking forward to a busy and exciting term! Many thanks for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs G Pickles and Mrs E Walters
