Assessment

At St.Peter's Methodist Primary School,  all children in Years 1 to 6 are assessed three times a year and we use either teacher assessment using NFER Tests or previous SATS papers for Reading & Maths and teacher assessment against our progression documents for all other subjects. We then gap analyse the results and this is used to inform future planning. We track their assessment and progress data on a system called Sonar.

This information is shared with parents/carers three times a year in the form of two mini reports and then a full end of year report.

Our Rainbow Class (Early Years) has a Reception Baseline Assessment in the first 6 weeks at our school. Further info can be found here.

Reading and Writing 

Assessment for writing and reading at St Peter’s Methodist is structured progressively, with each year group having its own set of specific expectations that build upon prior learning. For writing, assessment focuses on key areas such as transcription, sentence construction, composition, and punctuation, ensuring pupils develop both technical accuracy and creative expression. They also refine their ability to plan, draft, edit, and evaluate their work, drawing on reading and external sources for inspiration. Reading assessment complements writing by developing comprehension, vocabulary understanding, and analytical skills, enabling pupils to read fluently and critically. Overall, the assessment framework across year groups ensures consistent progression toward mastery of both reading and writing, preparing pupils for the transition to secondary education.
