Phonics
At St Peter's, the children learn how to read using a Phonics programme called 'Little Wandle'. They begin by learning the sounds and then they learn how to read words by saying the sounds (segmenting) and then pushing them together to hear the word (blending). Below is a link to the Little Wandle website which has lots of guidance to help you support your child at home with their phonics learning.
This link will help you to say the sounds, as well as providing information about the order of the sounds taught in our Reception and Year 1 classes.

On the Rainbow and Class 1 pages, you will find a PowerPoint presentation that has been shared this year with our parents. It explains how we teach phonics at St Peter's and how our reading scheme links to our phonics scheme.
Please follow the link below for Little Wandle parent page where you will find useful information and 'how to' guides:

How we assess Phonics
At St Peter’s we follow the Little Wandle scheme for Phonics. In EYFS and Year 1 children are assessed every half term on what they have covered (sounds and word reading) so gaps can be identified and small group interventions can be planned. It also allows us to best match a reading scheme book for every child. Children are also read with regularly with the class teacher and teaching assistant to check that reading books are appropriately challenging.
At the end of Year 1 every child will take a government set ‘Phonics Screening Check’. It is a booklet of 40 real and pseudo words for children to read to check their segmenting and blending. Results are reported to parents along with a child’s end of year report. If a child does not pass this screening check they will continue to receive Phonics intervention and support and will re-sit at the end of Year 2. Further information about the Phonics Screening Check can be found below.
